Lessons at Triple Creek Farm follow the traditional model from the 1950s and
before. The instructor is mounted in order to demonstrate, except with students who are very new and require assistance from the ground. Groups are typically
limited to two or three riders. Lesson times are longer than typically found today. Each lesson begins in the arena or round pen, with a specific technical
focus appropriate to the individual’s or group’s progress. After the technical
portion of the lesson, the lesson moves to the application phase on the cross country course where the day’s concept can be applied and tested in varied
footing.
Riders progress as slowly or as quickly as their ability, physical conditioning, and desire permit. Effectiveness is emphasized over style, as
well as dynamic balance and timing over form. Proper form is the result, not the means to improvement. In other words, we do not yell, “Heels down!” here,
but rather guide riders to find for themselves proper balance, flexibility and agility with their horse through structured practical experience.
